Game Theory (Final) - What's the REAL identity of the Penjikent Creature?

Since our game has so many mysterious endings and strange clues, we wanted to shed some light into what is actually happening behind and throughout the story!

Miss Beartha is the main character you come across as you enter the Smithmann Farm Estate. Her great grandfather has been involved in the excavation of many historical sights in Panjakent, Tajikistan in 1876.

The game intro also confirms this information and and let's the protagonist know that there are multiple artifacts that the descendants of the Smithmanns are still in possession of.

Having a conversation with Miss Beartha also seems to show that this is true.

As you, the protagonist, checks for clues in the attic. You come across a box with "Panjakent" written on it, which was the place where these excavations took place.

The first page shows the archaeologist team involved in these excavations along with the great grandfather of Miss Beartha.

The second page contains a clue for the safe combination, which unlocks The Homicide Ending and The Escape Ending. There are also some photos taken from their trips to Panjakent.

The third page shows where the actual mural has been found. It has been located inside of a cave system in the mountains of Panjakent.

The fourth page shows information and statistics regarding the excavations.

The protagonist also finds a more recent projector film with photos on it. So, you use the projector to check them out.

The first slide shows a person who has taken a photo of himself holding a photo from the journal of Miss Beartha's great grandfather. They show the same mountain where the original photo has been taken.

The second slide shows that, whoever this person was, has been investigating the history of this artifact before the protagonist even showed up to the Smithmann Farm Estate. This opens up questions about a mysterious figure, who may, possibly, be obsessed with the mural, the protagonist has been seeking after.

The third slide shows some ruins, that are located close to the original excavation sites. It's clear that a mysterious figure has went the lengths to visit these locations for an unknown purpose.

The fourth and final slide shows the original location of where the mural has been found.

Throughout the game, the protagonist encounters a strange creature that looks very similar to the creature depicted in the mural, which is a creature that was called Ebeğn and was "seen" over 1300 years ago. How come this creature still be "alive" and here after such a long time?

In the last Game Theory, we have discussed how the protagonist may have been spied on, as he was in the attic.

Further investigation by you, the protagonist, unlocks a trap door in the attic.

Inside of this room is a costume of a creature that looks extremely similar to Ebeğn. It's almost like this room is supposed to be kept a secret, inside of the walls of the Smithmann Farmhouse.

This raises the question of whether the creature you encounter is actually Ebeğn or someone / something wearing a disguise.

The newspaper story in The Escape Ending shows that the protagonist believes Miss Beartha is the one that was wearing the disguise. You describe her in the following way: "She had incredible speed for her age and there was something so eerie about her."

However, throughout the whole game, Miss Beartha has always been very slow and acted like an old person. She even tells the protagonist that she is "too old to climb the ladders" to the attic.

In the newspaper article shown at the end of The Escape Ending, the protagonist learns that after the police had arrived at the farmhouse, Miss Beartha was nowhere to be seen.

After gathering all of this information, it is now up to you to decide whether:

  • The creature was actually the real Ebeğn, who is still "alive" after 1300 years.
  • ...or was the creature a costume worn by Miss Beartha, herself, or another mysterious figure.
  • ...if it was a costume, was it only worn by one person or multiple figures.
  • ...or does the mural have unknown properties that result in the Smithmanns acting this way.

One final clue is that, after the protagonist shoots the "creature" in The Homicide Ending. You can see that the newspaper article shows that Miss Beartha has been the one who was shot.

However zooming into the crime scene photo taken after Miss Beartha's death reveals a silhouette of a creature that looks exactly like the one, that the protagonist has encountered in the attic...

Well.. Miss Beartha. This is what's great about my job as an archaeologist.

We discover new things constantly. This... mural that you have...

...is a lot older than you might think, likely painted around 6th century.

What your great grandfather found is... truly... fascinating.

It seems to depict a forsaken creature...

from the Sogdian folklore... called Ebeğn.
